A/C Tips

As we wrap up the month of August, Northcentral Electric Power Association hopes that we were able to help you and your family, workplace, or farm become more energy efficient and help bring down your utility bill.  But, we wanted to emphasize the most utilized device in your home or workplace during the hottest month of the year, your air conditioning system.  These are some things to keep in mind as September is expected to be hotter than usual in the Mid-South and for when the temperatures rise starting next year.

  1. Preventative Maintenance.  This is useful all year round.  Having your air system checked by a professional on an annual basis can keep you aware of any potential problems.  Keeping your vents clean and free from obstruction allows your air system run more efficiently and reduces strain.  Remember, it takes more work to get the same results if there are problems.
  2. Replace your filters.  Making sure your filters in your air conditioning system runs right along with preventative maintenance.  Air filters should be changed every 2-3 months.
  3. Keep your air conditioner in the shade.  If your unit is outside, try to keep it in the shade; cooler air surrounding the unit will make it easier to run cooler air into your home.
  4. Keep it cool around your thermostat.  Just like it’s easier for your air conditioning unit to work in the shade, the area around your thermostat needs to be cool too.  Keep heat producing devices like lamps and televisions away from the thermostat.  Your thermostat runs the a/c based on the temperature in the immediate area.  If it’s warmer around the thermostat, it will continue to run your air conditioner for longer.
  5. Use ceiling fans.  Did you know that you can adjust the thermostat up 4 degrees without a change in comfort level if you use ceiling fans?  Those ceiling fans will help circulate cool air much easier and cost a fraction of the price to run versus the air conditioner.
  6. Landscaping.  Tall trees and landscaping help to provide shade for the home and make it easier to cool.
  7. Installing window film.  Window film can reduce some of the daylight coming into your home and help keep it cooler.  Window film also helps to keep your home warmer in the winter.  It also comes in a variety of designs.  You can pick some up from most local hardware stores.
